The other night, my son and I were late getting out the door, and instead of getting frustrated, I started dancing around the room pretending my bum was out of control. He laughed so hard and ran straight to the car to get away. No one was upset, and we even made it on time. That moment reminded me why I love photographing families the way I do.

Playfulness is one of the greatest gifts we can bring into motherhood -- and I believe it's one of the most powerful tools for creating authentic, joy-filled photos.

Playfulness builds connection

When families play together, the walls come down. Kids stop performing, parents relax, and laughter becomes the most natural pose.

During my sessions, we don't just "stand still and smile" the whole time. Instead we play games -- we dance, we twirl, and chase each other through the light. As a Springfield, Missouri family photographer, my favorite photos always come from play -- the giggles, the running, the in-between moments that show how much love already lives in your family.

Play invites authentic emotion

Play allows us to see one another again. When you're twirling your daughter or tickling your son, you forget about the camera -- and that's when the genuine smiles appear.

I always tell my clients, "You only have two jobs: be connected and have fun." You don't have to perform; you just have to show up and love your people.

Play mirrors god's heart

Jesus tells us to have childlike faith -- and I believe He delights when we also live with childlike joy.

There's something holy about the sound of laughter and the freedom of play. It's a glimpse of heaven's joy breaking into our everyday chaos.

So the next time you book family photos, let your kids run a little. Let yourself laugh a little louder. The best moments don't happen in the perfect pose -- they happen when you're fully present with the people God gave you.
