3 mistakes Families Make before photo day (and how to avoid them)

Family photos are exciting--but let's be honest, they can also feel overwhelming. Between choosing outfits, keeping kids happy, and wondering if everyone will cooperate, it's a lot for moms to carry.

As a Springfield, Missouri family photographer (and mama myself), I've seen both sides: the stress that sneaks in before photo day, and the joy that shines through when families feel prepared and relaxed. The good news? A little planning makes all the difference.

Here are 3 common mistakes families make before photo day--and how you can avoid them for a stress-free, joy-filled experience.

A dreamy portrait in a rose garden shows a tender moment between parent and child in soft sunlit surroundings in Springfield, Missouri.

1) waiting until the last minute to plan outfits

Outfits are the #1 stress point for moms. Last-minute choices often lead to dresses that you don't feel good in and colors that don't photograph well. My rule? Start with mom. When mom feels confident, the whole session flows better and photos are more likely to be cherished.

If you're not sure where to begin, I've written a whole post on this for you! And if you book with me, you can skip the stress altogether--my Client Closet is full of hand-picked dresses designed to flatter and photograph beautifully.

2) Putting too much pressure on kids (or yourself)

Expecting kids to "perform" leads to stress for everyone (I promise I'm not judging your parenting, mama. Personally, my kids are a lot like Donnie Thornberry! 😉). The best images aren't perfect smiles--they're giggles, hugs, and real connection.

Instead of practicing poses, just show up ready to enjoy each other. I'll guide you into natural, playful moments that make your Springfield family photos feel authentic and joy-filled.

3) Treating photos like a to-do list

Rushing into a session frazzled shows in the photos. Instead, see it as a pause in your busy schedule. Plan to arrive with extra time, and I always encourage families to grab ice cream afterwards to make it a memory.

When you're relaxed, your kids feel it too--and your portraits will reflect that peace.

Family photos don't have to be stressful! With thoughtful preparation and a photographer who guides you through every step, they can be joyful and meaningful.
